Monte Patria families face home damage from rising groundwater

In Monte Patria, Chile, families in the Vegas Verdes sector of Pueblo Hundido are facing severe damage to their homes following intense rainfall. Residents report that water is not only entering through roofs or windows but is emerging directly from the ground, affecting floors, bedrooms, and walls.

Local authorities, including the Mayor of Monte Patria, Cristian Herrera, have coordinated with the Ministry of Housing and technical teams from SERVIU to inspect the affected properties. Preliminary findings from SERVIU suggest that the water is not merely from direct rainfall but is caused by subterranean water tables emerging inside the homes. Soil mechanics studies are being planned to determine the exact cause and find a solution.
