Monte Pettinascura weather radar resumes operations
The Monte Pettinascura weather radar has resumed operations after a prolonged period of inactivity. The facility has been transmitting data regularly for approximately 84 hours, restoring a vital component of the regional atmospheric monitoring network.
The reactivation follows public alerts raised by CNR researcher Carlo Tansi and meteorologist Fabio Zimbo, who highlighted the risks associated with the radar's downtime. Both experts expressed gratitude to Calabria Region President Roberto Occhiuto for his intervention in addressing the technical and bureaucratic obstacles, despite the facility not falling under direct regional jurisdiction.
The return to service is considered critical as the autumn season begins, a period characterized by an increased need to monitor intense meteorological phenomena. The radar provides essential nowcasting capabilities, allowing for the real-time tracking of precipitation and atmospheric events to support hydrogeological risk prevention and public safety.
