Monte Verde in Brazil to impose vehicle‑based tourist tax

From 1 July, tourists entering the Monte Verde district of Camanducaia, Minas Gerais, will be required to pay an environmental preservation fee based on the type of vehicle they use. An automated plate‑reading system will record each vehicle, and drivers can settle the charge online or at physical points. The rates are: motorcycles R$ 4.60; small cars R$ 9.20; utility vehicles R$ 13.80; vans and excursion vehicles R$ 32.20; micro‑buses and trucks R$ 46; buses R$ 73.60.

The municipal council stipulated that the collected funds, after covering operating costs, will be earmarked for Monte Verde’s upkeep: 35 % for solid‑waste collection and the remainder for urban maintenance, green‑area cleaning and sustainability projects. Vehicles belonging to local residents, nearby municipalities, workers, official fleets and other essential categories are exempt, while rideshare and tourist‑operated cars must pay the fee.
