Montecassino Abbey resumes management of Tropea sanctuary

The Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino has resumed management of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola in Tropea, reviving long-standing religious and cultural traditions. This management return honors a historical connection dating back 936 years to August 1090, when Duke Roger I granted the church to the Benedictine Monastery.

To celebrate the feast of the Madonna Assunta, recent festivities included a sea procession where 18th-century religious sculptures were carried by boat from Zambrone to the beach of Riaci. Upcoming celebrations for 2026 will feature a Pontifical Mass presided over by Dom Luca Fallica and musical performances.
