Monteforte Irpino commemorates 13th anniversary of Acqualonga bus crash
On 28 July 2013 a tourist bus fell more than 30 metres from the Acqualonga viaduct on the A16 motorway near Monteforte Irpino, killing 40 passengers returning to Pozzuoli. Judicial investigations later concluded that the disaster was the result of serious omissions and negligence regarding vehicle condition and viaduct safety. Thirteen years later, memorial events were held in Monteforte Irpino, Pozzuoli and the surrounding province. Deputy Antonio Caso recalled the victims in a speech to the Italian Chamber of Deputies. Local officials, families and survivors gathered at the Monument of Memory, where names of the dead were read, and moments of personal testimony were shared, including the story of 16‑year‑old victim Simona Del Giudice. Firefighter Emilio Matarazzo, who rescued a ten‑year‑old girl, planted an olive tree with a survivor as a symbol of renewal.
