Azores faces budget debates and strategic shifts

The Azores region is facing significant political and economic debates regarding its future development and budget allocations. At the Game Changers Forum, President José Manuel Bolieiro emphasized the archipelago's strategic geopolitical importance in the Atlantic and its potential for leadership in sustainability and digital transitions.

However, the proposed 2027 investment plan has drawn sharp criticism. The Azores Agricultural Federation (FAA) labeled the proposal the “worst in 20 years,” citing a 29% reduction in agricultural funding, which amounts to a 21 million euro decrease compared to 2026. Meanwhile, political leaders are focusing on European Union relations, with PS/Azores leader Francisco César calling for “predictable resources” and specific funding to compensate for the costs of being an ultra-peripheral region.

In the education sector, various municipalities are implementing localized investments. Cascais has inaugurated a new 34 million euro secondary school co-funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan. Other regions, such as Montemor-o-Velho, are investing 6.4 million euros in school renovations and social support, while Aveiro and Vila Real have also allocated funds for school management and classroom equipment. Additionally, the Bloco de Esquerda party is proposing improved social protections and wages for educational support professionals in the Azores.
