Montenegrin NGOs protest government decision on Morinje memorial plaque

Non-governmental organizations in Montenegro, including Miholjski zbor and Srbi u Crnoj Gori, have criticized the Montenegrin government's decision to legally formalize a controversial memorial plaque in Morinje.

The plaque contains text describing the conflict as a “Greater Serbian aggression against Croatia,” a phrasing that critics argue imposes collective guilt on the Serbian people and misrepresents historical context. The NGOs are demanding that the government explain how this decision serves the “special public interest” and why European integration is being used as a justification for the move.

Representatives from these organizations argue that the decision stigmatizes the Serbian population and fails to distinguish between individual war crimes and an entire ethnic group. They have called for transparent debate and accountability from both the ruling coalition and Serbian political representatives within the government.
