Montenegro and Romania strengthen diplomatic ties amid regional integration efforts

Montenegro and Romania are emphasizing their long-standing diplomatic ties, which date back to the Berlin Congress of 1878. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toju and Montenegrin Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimović highlighted that their partnership, formalized through embassy-level relations in 2006, is built on shared values and a commitment to regional stability.

Romania continues to support Montenegro’s integration into NATO and its aspirations to join the European Union. The ministers noted that EU expansion into the Western Balkans is a strategic necessity for European security and resilience against hybrid threats and disinformation.

In sports, the Montenegrin women’s cadet handball team received a hero's welcome in Podgorica after winning a historic silver medal at the World Championship. Coach Miloš Perović praised the generation for their achievement, despite a narrow loss to Spain in the final.

Meanwhile, the Montenegrin men’s national basketball team has begun preparations for the second round of the 2027 World Cup qualifiers. Following a strong 4-2 start in the first round, the team is preparing for upcoming matches against Georgia and Ukraine, with players Petar Popović and Nemanja Radović returning to the squad.
