Babiš and Fico unveil Czech-Slovak friendship monument in Prague
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico gathered at the Strakova Academy in Prague to unveil a bronze monument titled ‘Medzi nami’ (Between Us). Created by sculptor Vladimír Durbák and funded by the Penta group, the artwork depicts the maps of both nations joined by reaching hands.
During the ceremony, both leaders emphasized the deep historical, cultural, and economic ties between the two countries. Babiš noted that the nations function like a family, while Fico highlighted the importance of peaceful cooperation amidst global challenges such as energy crises and security threats. The unveiling serves as a symbol of renewed intergovernmental consultations, which are scheduled to continue in Slovakia on November 10.
The event was marked by protests from demonstrators outside the government headquarters. Protesters used whistles, engine noise, and the playing of the Russian national anthem to express opposition to Fico’s political stance regarding Russia and the conflict in Ukraine. Despite the demonstrations, the leaders proceeded with the ceremony to honor the shared heritage of the former Czechoslovakia.
