Montenegrin seafarers help rescue 27 migrants near Mallorca

On 18 July, the container vessel MSC LAURA was sailing the Gioia Tauro‑Valencia route when it spotted a small craft about 50 nautical miles off the coast of Mallorca. The craft carried 27 migrants from Algeria, including two children. The ship’s crew, which included seven Montenegrin seafarers, immediately notified the Spanish Search and Rescue (SAR) centre, stopped the vessel and provided essential aid – food, water, basic shelter and a windward side to protect the migrants from the sea.

Spanish SAR units arrived shortly thereafter and safely transferred all migrants to their rescue boat. Montenegro’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs praised the crew for their professional, responsible and humane response, highlighting the long‑standing maritime tradition of Montenegrin sailors.
