Western Balkans economic and EU integration discussed at Montenegro 2026 conference

At the Montenegro 2026 Economy Conference, leaders and experts discussed the economic and political integration of the Western Balkans with the European Union. Discussions focused on reducing trade barriers, improving transport corridors, and enhancing digital resilience in the financial sector.

Experts highlighted the strategic importance of the Port of Bar as a logistics hub for 11 million users, noting that its development depends on improved road and rail infrastructure. CEFTA officials emphasized the need for digital certificates and paperless trade to increase regional competitiveness.

On the political front, German official Johann Wadephul urged EU members to fulfill long-standing promises of enlargement to maintain credibility and counter the influence of Russia and China in the region. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos noted that Montenegro is in the final stages of its accession negotiations, with a potential conclusion by late 2026 or early 2027.
