Montenegro adopts 347 new health care protocols to boost system quality

The National Commission for Quality and Safety in Health Care, convened by Montenegro's Ministry of Health, approved 347 new protocols covering key areas of the country's health system. With these additions, the total number of approved protocols reaches 818, establishing a unified framework for consistent clinical practice and enhanced patient and staff safety.

The protocols were drafted by several institutions: the Institute of Public Health of Montenegro contributed 165 protocols, the Blood Transfusion Institute supplied 66, and the Clinical Center of Montenegro prepared 116. The measures address quality and risk management, strategic planning, human resources, occupational health, information systems, data protection, communication with service users, public procurement, infection control, laboratory diagnostics, equipment maintenance, and many specific public‑health procedures. A dedicated section focuses on transfusion medicine, standardising donor selection, blood collection and processing, apheresis, molecular and serological diagnostics, transplant immunology, and quality control of blood components.

Officials said the new protocols represent a significant step toward standardising operations across health institutions, improving service quality, and strengthening safety standards nationwide.
