Montenegro and Croatia face abandoned horses crisis as summer heat worsens
In the outskirts of Podgorica, Montenegro, dozens of horses have been left without shelter, water or food as temperatures approach 40 °C. Animal‑rights activists say the situation reflects a long‑standing problem of neglected large animals, and city officials say they are working to provide temporary shelters in line with existing regulations.
In Croatia, concerned citizens reported two horses near Gornji Jelenje showing visible injuries and exhaustion from the heat. Police, municipal workers and veterinary inspectors have launched an investigation, seeking the owners and assessing possible animal‑cruelty violations.
