Montenegro business leaders debate economic impact of Euro model
Montenegrin business leaders and officials are debating the implementation of the proposed ‘Euro model,’ an economic program aimed at increasing wages. While government representatives and unions highlight the potential for improved living standards and youth retention, the business community expresses significant concerns regarding economic sustainability.
The Chamber of Commerce of Montenegro, specifically within the tourism and trade sectors, has called for a detailed sectoral analysis before the model is finalized. Business owners warn that rising labor costs could undermine international competitiveness, particularly for seasonal hotels, small enterprises, and rural tourism in northern Montenegro. They note that the ability to pass these costs to consumers is limited, as many 2027 arrangements are already being negotiated.
In response to the growing debate, the Economy Faculty of the University of Montenegro announced it will conduct its own independent analysis of the model’s impact on macroeconomic stability and business operations. The faculty emphasized that this research will be driven by its social mission rather than commercial requests or specific stakeholder calls.
