Amir Barati extradited from Montenegro to US over massive cyberattack campaign

Montenegrin authorities have extradited Amir Barati, a 40-year-old dual Iranian and Turkish citizen, to the United States. Barati was arrested in the coastal town of Kotor on June 25 following an arrest warrant issued by the FBI.

Barati is accused of participating in a massive, multi-year cyberattack campaign linked to the Iranian Mabna Institute and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Since 2013, the alleged operations have targeted over 150 universities in the United States and 178 institutions abroad, as well as 42 private companies and five U.S. government agencies.

Prosecutors claim the hacking activities resulted in the theft of more than 31 terabytes of scientific data, academic information, and intellectual property. The total economic damage from these attacks is estimated to exceed 3.4 billion US dollars. The stolen data was reportedly transferred to the Iranian government and sold to Iranian universities.
