Montenegro faces foreign interference risks, warns EU official
David McAllister, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), has warned of potential foreign interference in Montenegro. He noted that the European Parliament has repeatedly cautioned against external influences, stating that disinformation and political pressure could undermine democratic institutions and public trust in the EU accession process.
McAllister emphasized that the European Union should assist Montenegro in protecting its elections, countering disinformation, and strengthening independent institutions. He noted that the upcoming parliamentary elections next year will be critical, and the pace of EU accession will depend on whether political parties maintain reform efforts during the campaign and after forming a new government.
Despite these concerns, McAllister identified Montenegro as the most advanced candidate country, highlighting strong public support for EU membership. He stressed that this creates a responsibility for political parties to cooperate in meeting remaining requirements, regardless of party affiliation.
