Montenegro faces high breast cancer mortality due to late diagnosis
While breast cancer therapies are improving, Montenegro faces higher mortality rates compared to other European nations due to late-stage diagnoses. Dr. Nikola Milašević, director of the Medical Oncology Clinic at the Institute of Oncology KCCG, emphasizes that organized mammography screening and regular medical check-ups are essential to reducing mortality.
Data indicates that prevention remains a significant weakness. A survey of patients revealed that many skip preventive exams due to difficulties scheduling ultrasound and mammography appointments or a lack of symptoms. In Montenegro, breast cancer accounts for more than a quarter of all cancers diagnosed in women, with nearly 500 new cases and 166 deaths reported annually. Early detection through multimodal therapy significantly improves cure rates, but the current trend of late diagnosis limits therapeutic options.
