Montenegro implements new framework for post-disaster damage assessment

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro held a meeting with municipal commission representatives to discuss the implementation of the Law on Post-Disaster Recovery. The session, hosted by the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, focused on providing a clearer and more unified framework for assessing damages, losses, and needs following natural disasters.

Key topics included the Decree on Unified Methodology for Damage Assessment, which introduces standardized forms to ensure consistent procedures across Montenegro. Discussions also covered the Decree on the List of Disasters, which specifies the types of events covered by the law. Participants addressed practical challenges such as commission formation, coordination between local and state levels, and the verification of collective reports.

Passed in January, this law represents the first systemic legal framework in Montenegro dedicated to post-disaster recovery, planning aid distribution, and reconstruction measures. The Ministry intends to continue providing technical support and training to municipal members to ensure efficient application of the new regulations.
