Montenegro implements new Law on Weapons and Ammunition

Montenegro's new Law on Weapons and Ammunition officially entered into force on August 19 following its publication in the Official Gazette. The legislation implements the European Parliament and Council Directive 2021/555 regarding the control of the acquisition and possession of weapons.

The law establishes new regulations for the procurement, possession, carrying, and trade of weapons and ammunition. It also covers production, testing, marking, repair, modification, and decommissioning of firearms, as well as services for sport and recreational shooting.

Regarding border crossings, Montenegrin citizens residing in the country may transport legally held weapons and ammunition across borders without prior notice. Non-resident Montenegrins and foreign nationals without permanent residency may also exercise this right without prior notice when transporting weapons for hunting, sports competitions, or cultural and artistic events. Such transfers must occur through international traffic border crossings, and individuals are required to declare the items to the border police, providing necessary documentation and proof of purpose.
