Montenegro launches first of two new patrol vessels in France

French shipbuilder KERSHIP has launched the first of two OPV 60M offshore patrol vessels, named ‘Petar I Njegoš’, at its Lanester shipyard. This vessel is intended to form the foundation of the Montenegrin Navy’s maritime forces.

The multi-purpose vessels are designed for combat and non-combat tasks, including patrolling, data collection, and surveillance of maritime, aerial, and underwater environments. Technical specifications include a 40 mm caliber gun, modular construction for various weapon types, multiple radar systems, optoelectronic sensors, and sonar.

The first vessel is expected to be delivered to Montenegro in April or May 2027, following outfitting and sea trials. The second vessel, ‘Petar II Njegoš’, is currently under construction and is scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2027.

This procurement program aims to strengthen Montenegro’s maritime sovereignty and its operational contributions to NATO within the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas. The project follows recent diplomatic efforts to deepen defense and industrial cooperation between France and Montenegro.
