Montenegro leads UN initiative for healthy school air
Montenegrin Health Minister Vojislav Šimun opened a high-level event at the United Nations headquarters in New York titled ‘Healthy Indoor Air in Schools: Every Breath Shapes Learning’. The event, held on the margins of the 81st UN General Assembly, was co-organized by Montenegro, France, and Eswatini.
Šimun emphasized that indoor air quality is a critical issue affecting not only the environment but also children's health, concentration, school attendance, and overall learning capabilities. He called for air quality to be integrated into public health, education, and infrastructure policies.
The initiative builds upon the Global Pledge for Healthy Indoor Air, which was previously supported by Montenegro and France. Participants noted that while water quality in schools is strictly monitored, indoor air quality often lacks similar oversight and attention from policymakers.
