Montenegro marks 35 years as an ecological state
Montenegro is marking the 35th anniversary of its declaration as an ecological state. During the 'Beauty is in the Small' forum in Žabljak, officials and dignitaries unveiled a monument to commemorate the 1991 Declaration.
President Jakov Milatović introduced the 'Ecological State 2.0' initiative, which includes 20 proposals such as free national park access for citizens, designating Žabljak as an ecological capital, and implementing stricter waste and forest fire protections. EU Ambassador Johan Satler emphasized the need for better implementation of environmental plans, while Minister of Ecology Damjan Ćulafić called the original 1991 decision visionary.
However, the anniversary has also drawn criticism. Environmental NGOs held protests in Žabljak, arguing that the country faces increasing ecological threats to its rivers, forests, and mountains. Academic and activist voices, including Professor Dragan Hajduković, expressed concern that the nation has drifted away from its original ecological vision due to mismanagement and unregulated exploitation.
