Montenegro MP criticizes government fuel excise tax decisions

Boris Mugoša, a Member of Parliament for the European Alliance, has criticized the Montenegrin government for its recent decisions regarding fuel excise taxes. He claims the government is adjusting taxes on diesel and unleaded gasoline in a way that harms citizens and the economy.

Mugoša stated that instead of fuel prices decreasing, they rose by 6 to 7 cents. He noted that while the law allows for a 50 percent reduction in diesel excise taxes, the government only implemented a 10 percent reduction. Furthermore, the reduction was not applied to unleaded gasoline.

According to Mugoša, diesel prices are currently 54 cents per liter higher than they were a few months ago, representing a 40 percent increase. He highlighted that the state earns significant revenue through both excise taxes and VAT on these fuel prices. He also criticized the government for rejecting a proposal to temporarily reduce the 21 percent VAT on fuel, a measure previously adopted by Croatia.
