Luís Montenegro criticizes US-Russia diesel agreement

Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has criticized a recent agreement between the United States and Russia regarding the supply of Russian diesel. Speaking in Brussels ahead of an EU summit, Montenegro described the deal as both "inconsistent" and "inconsequent."

He argued that the agreement, which involves the immediate provision of 300,000 tons of Russian diesel to the market, will not effectively resolve rising fuel prices or provide long-term availability. Furthermore, he stated the deal sends the wrong signal regarding international support for Ukraine, potentially undermining efforts to pressure Russia toward a just peace.

Addressing the energy crisis, Montenegro called the current fuel prices "absurd" and "insane," noting their impact on all citizens. He advocated for a unified European response, including joint gas purchases and the strengthening of European refining capacity to prevent supply crises and stabilize costs.
