Montenegro President Milatović calls EU membership a natural next step
President Jakov Milatović told a ceremony in Cetinje on Montenegro's Statehood Day that joining the European Union is the natural continuation of the country's long‑standing commitment to freedom, dignity and European values. He was joined by special guests – Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar, Croatian President Zoran Milanović and EU enlargement commissioner Marta Kos – whose presence he said underscores regional friendship and support.
Milatović noted that Montenegro’s European path began on 13 July, the date that marks both the 1878 international recognition of Montenegrin independence and the 1941 uprising against occupation. He said the nation is the leading candidate for EU membership, expects to conclude accession negotiations by the end of 2026 and aims to become a member by 2028.
