Montenegro President proposes ‘Ecological State 2.0’ initiative

Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović met with representatives from the academic community and civil sector to discuss the renewal of the country’s environmental vision. Ahead of the 35th anniversary of Montenegro being declared an ecological state, Milatović proposed a concept termed ‘Ecological State 2.0’ to transform the constitutional principle into practical, modern policy.

The discussions highlighted several critical environmental challenges facing the nation, including unplanned urbanization, inadequate waste management, the protection of rivers and seas, biodiversity loss, and the impacts of climate change. Milatović emphasized that natural resources are a primary developmental advantage for Montenegro, but their preservation requires long-term vision and decisions based on public interest and scientific knowledge.

The President called for the development of clear, measurable initiatives to ensure that environmental protection serves as a standard for spatial management, water and forest conservation, and national development planning.
