Croatia and Montenegro reach progress on bilateral disputes

During the Berlin Process summit in Montenegro, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić discussed resolving several outstanding bilateral issues. Plenković noted a “great leap forward” regarding the compensation of former detainees from the Morinj camp.

Two specific issues were addressed following decisions by the Montenegrin government: the renaming of a municipal pool in Kotor and the formal approval of a memorial plaque in Morinj. The Kotor pool, previously named after water polo player Zoran Gopčević, will now be named ‘Gradski bazen – Petar II Petrović Njegoš’. This change follows Croatian concerns regarding the previous name.

Additionally, the Montenegrin government retroactively approved a memorial plaque in Morinj dedicated to Croatian civilians and prisoners of war. While Plenković welcomed these steps as a move in the right direction, he emphasized that six other issues remain, including the search for missing persons from the war, war crimes prosecution, and border demarcation. Montenegro aims to close its remaining EU negotiation chapters by the end of the year, a goal supported by European partners.
