Montenegro proposes 500,000 euro subsidy for hotel energy efficiency

The Government of Montenegro has proposed a new program to provide 500,000 euros in non-refundable funds to support energy efficiency and renewable energy investments in the hotel sector.

Developed through cooperation between the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Energy and Mines, and the Environmental Protection Fund (Eco-fund), the initiative aims to support at least ten hotels. Individual establishments may receive up to 50,000 euros, covering a maximum of 70 percent of eligible investment costs. The Eco-fund will serve as the implementing body, while the Ministry of Tourism will provide technical and operational oversight.

The program seeks to reduce energy consumption, lower operating costs, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging the adoption of new materials and technologies. This initiative addresses the low energy efficiency levels currently seen in Montenegro's building sector, where households and the service sector accounted for 48 percent of final energy consumption in 2024. Given that tourism contributed 30.9 percent to Montenegro's GDP in 2019, the government is prioritizing this sector to drive economic and environmental improvements.
