Montenegro proposes new consumer rights for appliance and phone repairs
The Ministry of Economic Development in Montenegro has introduced proposed amendments to the Consumer Protection Law aimed at expanding consumer rights regarding the repair of goods. Under the new regulations, manufacturers would be obligated to repair household appliances, mobile phones, and other goods even after the initial two-year warranty period expires. Additionally, manufacturers must offer spare parts at reasonable prices.
To facilitate these services, the Ministry plans to establish a national section of the European online platform for repairs. This platform will allow consumers in Montenegro to find and compare offers from qualified service providers, refurbished goods sellers, and local repair initiatives. The Ministry aims to have the Montenegrin component of the platform operational by July 31, 2027, or within six months of the European Commission establishing the joint online system.
The legislative changes are intended to align Montenegrin law with European Union standards and address legal gaps that currently prevent consumers from exercising substantive rights in their dealings with traders and manufacturers.
