Montenegro ranks lowest in European port goods traffic
Montenegro recorded the lowest maritime goods traffic among 26 European countries surveyed by Eurostat and Euronews in 2024. The country processed 2.5 million tons of goods through its ports, ranking last in the analysis, which included EU members, EFTA members, and candidate countries.
Regional comparisons highlight significant disparities. Montenegro's port traffic is nearly nine times lower than that of neighboring Croatia, which handled 20.9 million tons. Other regional entities with higher volumes include Slovenia with 21.8 million tons and Bulgaria with 29.5 million tons. Even smaller island economies such as Malta, Iceland, and Cyprus reported higher throughput than Montenegro.
At the top of the European scale, the Netherlands led with 538.1 million tons of goods, followed by Turkey, Italy, and Spain. The data suggests substantial potential for the development of Montenegro's transit functions, particularly regarding the Port of Bar.
