Western Balkan transporters plan EU border blockade on September 14
Professional transporters from the Western Balkans, including representatives from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Montenegro, have announced a coordinated regional blockade of all border crossings into the European Union scheduled for September 14.
The protest is a direct response to the European Commission's decision not to amend Schengen rules regarding the stay of non-EU citizens. Currently, professional drivers are limited to a 90-day stay within a 180-day period. Transporters argue this rule is incompatible with the nature of international freight transport, which requires frequent and extended travel.
Nikola Brković of the Logistics Consortium in BiH and Neđo Mandić of the International Transport Association in Serbia stated that the blockade will include freight terminals and railway terminals for semi-trailers. They characterized the move as a necessary preventive step to force a solution, as they believe the European Commission has ignored their previous protest notes and requests for a specific legal regime for professional drivers.
