Montenegro sees 16 billion euros in FDI as airports plan major upgrades

An analysis by the Economic Chamber of Montenegro reveals that approximately 16 billion euros in foreign direct investment (FDI) has flowed into the country since its independence. This volume places Montenegro among the regional leaders in FDI relative to its economy size. Historically, Russia has been the largest single investor, accounting for roughly 13 percent of total FDI. While capital has arrived from over 120 countries, much of the investment has been concentrated in real estate and services rather than sectors that drive productivity and exports.

In parallel, Montenegro Airports is preparing for a major modernization cycle. Management estimates that between 200 and 300 million euros are required for fundamental upgrades to the Podgorica and Tivat airports. CEO Roko Tolić stated that the company possesses sufficient financial strength to fund these improvements without a concessionaire.

Prime Minister Milojko Spajić has announced the creation of a new Master Plan for the long-term development of the airports. Planned works include terminal expansions, runway reconstructions, and the addition of new gates. A key objective for the Podgorica airport is to enable the handling of wide-body aircraft to facilitate direct transoceanic flights.
