International Day of Older Persons marked across the Balkans
Various organizations across the Balkans and Croatia observed the International Day of Older Persons through community events, social gatherings, and discussions regarding elderly care.
In Montenegro, the Grabovac institution in Risno held a conference addressing the critical shortage of staff in homes for the elderly and people with disabilities. Officials emphasized that quality social protection requires both dedicated personnel and adequate support for caregivers. The Red Cross in Montenegro also highlighted the necessity of maintaining home care services, noting that funding responsibilities are shifting from the state to local governments.
In Croatia, celebrations included musical programs in Čakovec, a parade for over 500 retirees in Varaždin, and health awareness activities in Đurđevac, where citizens received blood pressure and glucose screenings. In Osijek, the Retirees' Association organized workshops and social gatherings to prevent isolation.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, activities included recreational gatherings in Prnjavor organized by the Red Cross and social centers, as well as the “Games Without Borders” event in Sarajevo, which hosted over 600 seniors to promote active aging.
