Montenegro textbooks spark controversy over omission of Serbian identity

Controversy has erupted in Montenegro following the publication of new school textbooks that allegedly omit the presence and historical role of Serbs within the country. Critics argue that the curriculum ignores the shared history between Serbia and Montenegro, specifically omitting key historical events and figures.

Vladimir Dobričanin, an official from United Montenegro, raised concerns that the content suggests Serbs do not exist as a distinct national community in the country. He questioned how historical figures such as Petar II Petrović Njegoš and King Nikola should be categorized if the Serbian identity is being minimized. Additionally, he noted that the textbooks fail to adequately represent the country's national minorities.

In Serbia, Miloš Vučević, president of the Serbian Progressive Party, condemned the textbooks as a “shameful edition” and accused Montenegrin authorities of falsifying reality. He stated that it is unacceptable to exclude Serbs from sections dedicated to nation and identity, arguing that the move targets children and threatens the rights of the significant Serbian population in Montenegro to preserve their language, culture, and identity.
