Montenegro to extradite Iranian hacker Amir Barati to the United States
The High Court in Podgorica has ruled that Iranian hacker Amir Barati will be extradited to the United States. Montenegrin Minister of Justice Bojan Božović confirmed the decision and stated that the U.S. Department of Justice has been notified.
Barati, a 39-year-old citizen of Iran and Turkey and a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was arrested in late June during a joint operation involving Montenegrin police and the FBI. He is accused of orchestrating massive cyberattacks against U.S. infrastructure since 2013, specifically targeting more than 150 universities. The alleged criminal activities, which include conspiracy to commit computer fraud, hacking, and identity theft, have caused estimated damages exceeding $3.4 billion. Barati faces prosecution in the U.S. Supreme Court in New York.
