Montenegro water quality faces serious challenges

The non-governmental organization Green Home has issued a warning regarding the alarming state of water quality in Montenegro. According to the 2025 Environmental Status Report from the Environmental Protection Agency, water ecosystems including rivers, lakes, and the sea are facing continuous pollution.

Analysis of 33 locations across seven quality elements shows that 66.7 percent of sites fail to meet the required water status. Specifically, 36.4 percent of locations recorded a moderate status, affecting areas such as the Crmnica, Cijevna, Mrtvica, and Zeta rivers, as well as parts of the Lim, Ljuboviđa, Popča, Kutska, Grlja, Tara, Veruša, and Ćehotina rivers.

Of greater concern, 21.2 percent of sites showed poor water quality in the Morača, Zeta, Lim, Ibar, and Ćehotina rivers. Additionally, 9.1 percent of locations reached a very poor status, including the Bojana river and specific points in the Lim and Ćehotina rivers. Only 11 locations met the required status, with only one site, Bistrica Beranska, recorded as having very good quality.
