Montenegro youth social media usage and digital security trends
Research conducted by the NGO Juventas indicates that social media significantly shapes the attitudes and identities of young people in Montenegro. Approximately 18 percent of youth spend more than five hours daily on these platforms. Key content drivers include influencers (46 percent), music (44 percent), and humor/memes (31 percent).
Instagram is the most prevalent platform at 93.4 percent, followed by YouTube at 82.5 percent and TikTok at 76.7 percent. Juventas notes that the emotional and personal nature of communication with influencers increases their impact compared to traditional media. The organization also highlighted the presence of negative influencers, including political propagandists.
In a separate study by Multimedijal Montenegro focusing on the northern regions of Bijelo Polje, Berane, and Mojkovac, researchers found that while youth are highly active online, they lack sufficient knowledge regarding digital security, personal data protection, and digital rights. Identified risks include digital violence, hate speech, and the spread of fake news.
