Montenegro’s rural exodus threatens national food production
Montenegro now has 74 villages with no residents and another 304 settlements where ten or fewer people live, many reduced to elderly households. The loss of inhabitants erodes the farming workforce, livestock care and the transmission of agricultural knowledge.
At the same time, climate change is intensifying droughts, floods, wildfires, late‑spring frosts and frequent hail storms, further destabilising domestic crop yields. As domestic output becomes increasingly uncertain, the state is spending roughly one billion euros each year on imported food, highlighting a growing reliance on external producers and global supply‑chain volatility.
