Montenegro's stance on Oluja anniversary criticized by Croatia

The cabinet of Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović said that attending the 31st‑year commemoration of the 1995 Operation Oluja is not a state obligation, noting that the event evokes painful memories for many citizens in Montenegro. The statement emphasized that relations with Croatia should be based on mutual respect and balanced remembrance of all war victims.

Former Croatian foreign minister Miro Kovač urged Montenegro to demonstrate genuine engagement in resolving outstanding bilateral issues, citing the role of former prime minister Milo Đukanović in normalising ties. Kovač said Croatia expects decisive steps from Montenegro as it pursues EU accession, and that the two NATO allies must move beyond superficial statements to concrete actions.
