Montepulciano hosts political convention for Democratic Party faction

A three-day political convention titled ‘Pronti per l'alternativa’ (Ready for the Alternative) is being held in Montepulciano, Tuscany. The event is organized by a faction of the Democratic Party (PD) led by Dario Franceschini, Andrea Orlando, and Roberto Speranza.

The group has launched the ‘Comitati per l'alternativa’ (Committees for the Alternative) and presented an eleven-page political document aimed at the 2027 general elections. A central point of debate is the proposal for primary elections to be held between late January and early February. This proposed format would feature a head-to-head contest between PD Secretary Elly Schlein and Movimento 5 Stelle leader Giuseppe Conte.

Giuseppe Conte and Alessandro Onorato have expressed objections to this restricted two-person format, advocating instead for an open competition. The convention includes various political leaders and is scheduled to conclude with an intervention by Elly Schlein.
