Montepulciano to host study day on 17th-century portraiture
A study day titled “L’identità ritratta agli albori del Seicento” will be held on November 7 at the Palazzo Comunale in Montepulciano. The event focuses on Italian portraiture from the late 16th to the early 17th centuries, with a specific emphasis on Caravaggesque contexts and early Caravaggism.
Promoted by the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the Municipality of Montepulciano, and the Museo Civico Pinacoteca Crociani, the initiative revisits themes from a 2012 scientific conference. The upcoming sessions will explore the representation of identity through portraiture and the linguistic and cultural transformations of the genre during a decisive period in European art history.
The conference will be presided over by Francesca Cappelletti, director of the Galleria Borghese in Rome, and curated by Massimo Pulini. The program includes contributions from various scholars specializing in art history and costume history.
