Montería announces relocation of 430 families to new housing

The Colombian government and the Mayor's Office of Montería have announced a project to provide 467 free houses to 430 families currently living in Playa Brígida. The settlement is located within the 30-meter flood zone of the Sinú River, where residents face annual flooding risks.

Mayor Hugo F. Kerguelen García stated that the relocation process, part of the Renacer del Sinú and Villa Sinú projects, will ensure that no family leaves their current location until they receive the keys to their new homes. The new houses will include legal titles and be situated in a non-flood-prone area. Once the relocation is complete, the current land will be returned to the river's protection zone, allowing for the creation of a 3.75-hectare linear park.

Despite the announcement, some long-term residents expressed skepticism due to decades of unfulfilled housing promises and previous failed relocation attempts. However, community leaders noted that 93% of the community supports the project, specifically because it offers single-family homes rather than apartment towers.
