Monterey County Government Center closure extended due to sewer malfunction

The Monterey County Government Center in Salinas will remain closed to the public and staff through the end of the week. The closure follows an extensive sewer line malfunction that occurred last week, necessitating significant cleanup and remediation work.

The shutdown primarily impacts the building’s first floor and affects several key public-facing offices, including the Assessor, Clerk-Recorder, Treasurer-Tax Collector, Public Defender, and the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors. To maintain continuity, county officials are working to establish satellite service locations for these impacted departments.

Other departments, such as Human Resources and the County Administrative Office, are transitioning to remote work. Supervisors for District 3 and District 5 are also operating from community-based offices in King City and Monterey. County facilities teams and contractors are currently monitoring the remediation process to ensure the safety of employees and the public before reopening.
