Flock Safety faces scrutiny over security breaches and surveillance concerns

Flock Safety, a major provider of automated license plate readers, is facing increasing scrutiny from lawmakers and security concerns following reports of a software breach. In Texas, the Department of Transportation has suspended approvals for new Flock cameras or similar third-party devices in public roadways under the direction of Governor Greg Abbott.

In West Virginia, Republican lawmakers have accused the company of providing inaccurate information regarding its security protocols, specifically concerning the implementation of multi-factor authentication. Meanwhile, in Monterey County, California, the Board of Supervisors is reviewing a proposal for the Sheriff’s Office to utilize the technology amid community concerns regarding privacy and data access.

Adding to the controversy, a joint investigation by Wired and 404 Media revealed that hackers allegedly breached a Flock camera, successfully recovering an encryption key to access videos of thousands of vehicle detections. The investigation also found that the software running on the devices is capable of detecting people in addition to vehicles.
