Monterrey Casino Royale massacre: Families denounce impunity 15 years later

Fifteen years after the attack on the Casino Royale in Monterrey, Mexico, victims' families are denouncing persistent impunity. Despite the deaths of 52 people, including two pregnant women, only one person has been sentenced for the primary cause of the massacre, with one additional sentence for accumulated causes.

The attack occurred on August 25, 2011, when an armed group, allegedly linked to the Cartel de los Zetas, set fire to the casino and blocked the exits. Official versions suggest the motive was retaliation after the casino owner refused to pay extortion demands. While investigations were opened against 25 individuals, families claim justice remains unfulfilled.

During a memorial service marking the 15th anniversary, spokesperson Samara Pérez Muñiz stated that families have filed an injunction because the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) intends to conclude its recommendation regarding the events. Families argue this is premature while criminal proceedings remain open and critical information is still missing.
