Montevago mayor postpones wedding amid arranged marriage allegations

The mayor of Montevago, Margherita La Rocca Ruvolo, has postponed a wedding scheduled for August 11 between a 29-year-old local woman and a 26-year-old Tunisian national. The decision was made following a report alleging the marriage might be an arranged arrangement.

The report suggested that the bride's father may have received 8,000 euros from the groom to facilitate the union. Mayor La Rocca Ruvolo stated she acted out of caution after receiving a serious report, noting that the young woman is known to social services and possesses certain vulnerabilities.

Rosario Gambino, the bride's father, has denied the allegations, asserting that his daughter is in love and that no money was exchanged. The groom is currently in Italy with irregular residency status and is subject to existing expulsion orders and mandatory reporting requirements. The Prosecutor's Office of Sciacca has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances.
