Montevideo and Jujuy Launch Regional Luthería Workshops for Young Instrument Makers
From 17 to 28 August, Montevideo will host the XI Multinational Luthería Workshop, a phase of the Iberorquestas Juveniles programme that gathers young luthiers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. The event, held in facilities provided by the Sodre and supported by the Fundación Orquestas, focuses on repairing and crafting string instruments with native Uruguayan woods, helping more than 5,000 children in the national orchestra system keep their instruments in optimal condition.
In Argentina, the province of Jujuy runs the Semana del Charango from 3 to 7 August. The five‑day program includes concerts, workshops and a luthería fair in San Salvador, Tilcara and Humahuaca, backed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. International musicologist Julio Mendívil Trelles leads seminars and performances, while a dedicated “Warmis Charangueras” workshop highlights women makers of the Andean charango. Both events aim to preserve traditional instrument making and promote musical education across the Southern Cone.
