Montevideo collection agency fraud leads to 13 convictions
Thirteen individuals have been convicted following a major fraud investigation at a collection agency located in the La Teja neighborhood of Montevideo. The investigation was launched after a bank and the collection company reported an exponential increase in bank deposits that did not align with normal operations.
Police discovered that employees were performing fictitious operations, using adulterated screenshots and receipts to simulate immediate bank credits that did not actually enter the branch's cash reserves. This allowed for the transfer of company funds to third-party accounts. Upon intervention, authorities found a shortage of approximately $13.2 million pesos.
The Specialized Court for Organized Crime sentenced 12 of the individuals to 16 months in prison for fraud, with six identified as co-authors of the crime.
