Montevideo to invest US$ 38.5 million in sidewalk infrastructure
The Intendencia de Montevideo has launched the ‘Plan Veredas’, an infrastructure initiative involving an investment of US$ 38.5 million to construct and repair sidewalks across the city over the coming years.
The program is structured into three specific intervention lines: approximately US$ 15 million will be allocated to areas near settlements, US$ 14 million to avenues and their branches, and US$ 9.5 million for repairs in established neighborhoods. Priority zones were selected through a collaborative process involving the Intendencia, local municipalities, and the Departmental Board to address pedestrian infrastructure needs.
Key intervention areas near settlements include Casabó, Santa Catalina, Tres Ombúes, Casavalle, Marconi, Malvín Norte, Hipódromo, Piedras Blancas, Torre 8, Garín, and Maldonado. Avenue works will focus on sectors such as Luis Batlle Berres, Carlos María Ramírez, General Flores, Instrucciones, Aparicio Saravia, Camino Carrasco, Mataojo, and César Mayo Gutiérrez.
Marcelo Roux, Director of Public Spaces, stated the goal is to improve pedestrian circulation and facilitate access to health centers, educational institutions, cultural spaces, and public transport stops. Initial works in Municipio A and Municipio B are scheduled to begin between October and November.
