Montgomery County Public Schools announces school closure engagement process

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has announced a two-phase community engagement process regarding potential elementary and middle school closures and consolidations. The district is reviewing school organization and resource allocation due to the first enrollment decline in over 40 years, noting that student growth is uneven across the county.

The first round of engagement meetings will take place in October. These sessions are designed to help the community understand the reasons behind the potential closures and to gather input on the essential programs, services, and facilities that students and staff should have access to. MCPS clarified that the October meetings are not intended to select specific schools for closure.

A second round of meetings is scheduled for December, which will focus on the specific criteria used to evaluate potential consolidations. During this phase, participants will review how community feedback is being integrated with state law, Board of Education policy, and MCPS regulations to refine the evaluation approach.
